This book was conceived by its authors –professors of Strategy at Deusto Business School (DBS), part of the University of Deusto, and members of the School of Management created by Antonio Freije– as a practical companion to the study of Strategy.
It is intended to help those students who wish to broaden their knowledge of this field by applying the concepts and techniques studied in the Strategic Analysis and Strategic Management courses to real situations faced by relevant companies of our time.
It includes 24 case studies produced over the last ten years covering a broad spectrum of business sectors, from global commodity markets (the merger between Glencore and Xstrata) to electric cars (Tesla); consumer sectors such as the mobile phone industry (Apple’s growth and the emergence of Xiaomi) or the food industry (the Spanish brewing industry, Ebro Foods, Danone, El Pozo or Galletas Gullón), through industrial sectors such as seamless stainless steel tube manufacturing (Tubacex), the aeronautics components industry (ITP and Zodiac) or the automotive components industry (Grupo Antolin and Gestamp); as well as hollow glass manufacturers such as Vidrala or table glassware manufacturers such as Vicrila.
The energy industry is also present, with the cases of Iberdrola, Siemens Gamesa and Canadian Solar trying to open the horizon in renewable energies such as solar or wind power. In the construction industry, there is the ACS case; and in the restaurant services sector industry we included the purchase of La Nevera Roja by Just Eat. The hospitality industry is present in the NH Hoteles case. >
Finally, and in light of the recent global pandemic, the book also explores topics of interest in the biotechnology industry, such as the Pfizer/BioNTech alliance, the spectacular growth of Grifols, or the purchase of Pharmasset by Gilead.
This book, born from the student-teacher interaction inherent to teaching, is an interesting contribution for anyone who would like to further the study of strategy and learn about the reality of current companies in this field.
